A DISABLED man was left “embarrassed and frightened” after six police officers arrived to breathalyse him outside his home.

Simon Lock, 52, said his neighbours in Judds Close watched on as one unmarked and two marked police cars pulled into his driveway.

He passed the breath test, and Thames Valley Police has since apologised for the embarrassment caused.

The incident happened on Monday, January 31, at about 2.30pm after Mr Lock left The Woodman Inn, in North Leigh. He said he had drunk two alcoholic drinks in two hours.

Officers in an unmarked police car were concerned Mr Lock was over the limit and followed him from the pub.

But they did not have a breathalyser on board so called for a marked car to help. Two cars were in the area and both responded.

Mr Lock, a former media executive and presenter at radio station Fox FM, said: “It was embarrassing and quite frightening in a way.

“I just thought: ‘What the hell is going on here? Is it a massive drugs bust?’ “Well, I guess I’ve got some Anadin in the cupboard.

“The whole incident reminded me of the Keystone Kops.”

But he added: “There must be other things they should be doing, though. To waste three cars on this is ridiculous.

Mr Lock said he had a completely clean driving licence and had never been stopped by police before.

He said the incident had brought back memories of an accident when he was hit by a car in Corn Street, Witney, in 1996.

He broke eight ribs, both wrists, all his teeth and smashed a leg “to pieces”.

He was in hospital for two weeks and in bed for another two and a half months.

He now has to walk with a stick and drives a specially adapted car.

He said: “I had therapy for two and a half years to get rid of the flashbacks, and they have come back a bit now.”

Thames Valley Police spokesman Danny Donovan said: “A man, who was suspected of being over the drink drive limit, was identified by an unmarked police car. A request was made for a roads policing unit to attend. Two units were within range so both responded. Thames Valley Police takes drink driving extremely seriously and often carries out spot-checks to ensure the safety of local residents and to prevent serious injury and death.”

But he added: “We apologised that there were three vehicles used to do this and that it caused him embarrassment.”
