THIS was the moment of truth for these girls.

No doubt hearts were beating furiously as they waited to hear their fate.

They were all contestants for the title of Community Girl of Oxford in 1963.

Community centres in the city held a special week that year to publicise their activities and get more people through their doors.

The competition to elect a Community Girl was the highlight of the week.

We already knew the winner, because we published a photograph of her, with the girls who finished second and third (Memory Lane, July 26 last year).

Now this picture has come to light showing other girls who took part.

As we recalled, the winner was 16-year-old Janette Churchill, of Church Cowley Road, a junior window dresser in an Oxford shop.

She is on the extreme left in the picture, holding No 1.

In second place was Susan Morgan, 15, and third was Linda Comben, also 15.

They are Nos 7 and 10, although we are not sure which one is Susan and which one is Linda.

The 11 finalists were judged on poise, charm and personality when they appeared before the judges at Oxford Town Hall.

Janette’s job during her year in office was to help give the community centres a higher profile and highlight what each had to offer their communities.

Can we name any of the other girls? Over to you.

Let me know if you recognise anyone.
