THE news that British Transport Police are again being stationed at Oxford Railway Station, instantly took me back 60 years.
I was in the RAF and, after a weekend pass, I would catch a Sunday evening train to RAF Yatesbury.
The platforms were patrolled by the Army Military Police (Redcaps) and RAF (Snowdrops).
If I were in uniform I would be scrutinized for a decent haircut. Sometimes a crew cut was not sufficient and woe betide you if it reached your collar.
Your name, rank and number would then be forwarded to your camp. This resulted in a visit to the dreaded camp barber. There were no combs or scissors in those days, only a pair of clippers.
Happy days – even on a weekly salary of £1.40 (28 shillings).
