IT’S good to see a community getting together and doing something positive. The Old Bookbinders in East Oxford has become a pop up cultural hub and is getting a lot of support.

And the self-styled guerrilla arts centre has now won a ministerial seal of approval.

The former Green Street Bindery will be knocked down in April when it will be redeveloped as flats.

But in its final months it has been transformed into a “village hall for OX4” serving up cakes, comedy and cutting edge pop culture.

Yesterday the Minister for Culture and Wantage MP Ed Vaizey visited and said he was so impressed he believed the model could be replicated countrywide.

Despite the fact we got the ‘big society’ speech again, Mr Vaizey pointed out the worthiness of the project.

Not to mention it has utilised an empty space which would have mothballed otherwise.

The Old Bookbinders, open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, will stage gigs, comedy, theatre, fashion and art until it finally closes for good on March 31.

Check out the diary and pay a visit.

We hope other neighbourhoods will seek to follow its lead.
