Twenty firefighters were called to deal with fumes at Begbroke Science Park.

They were called at 6.36am yesterday to reports of excessive fumes in a laboratory at the Sandy Lane, Yarnton, facility.

Two firefighters entered the unoccupied building and found molten zinc boiling over, which created a dense vapour.

The gas and electric supply was cut off and the building was ventilated.

One person was checked at the scene by paramedics for possible zinc inhalation.

Incident commander Mike Bingham said: “The rapid response of the fire and rescue crews undoubtedly helped minimize the effects of the vapour leak enabling this facility to return to normal, as soon as possible with no injuries sustained.”
