Sir – At 2am on January 1, when my husband and I bicycled home from a delightful New Year’s party in Appleton, we were met by a chorus of birds singing their hearts out. They sang all the way from Cumnor village, down Cumnor Hill and into the Botley Road. Does anyone know why and what they might have been?
I can only think of, in the words of Paul McCartney, ‘Blackbirds singing in the dead of night’. Could he have been right?
