Sir – I have every sympathy with your correspondent (January 6), who fears that the closure of the Redbridge recycling facility to the general public will encourage fly-tipping on the nature reserve that she administers.

All her arguments make sense to me, apart from her final point: she suggests introducing a small charge for the dumping of household rubbish at Redbridge.

The Redbridge facility was set up to encourage people to use their own vehicles to transport large items for disposal, thereby saving public money. And as a council-tax payer I already contribute towards the running of this facility. Why should I have to pay twice to use it? Councillor Mitchell would defend the decision to close down Redbridge by emphasising the county council’s plan to open a new site north of Kidlington.

That will be all very well for householders living on that side of the city. But what about the most densely populated communities to the east, south, and west of the city, who currently have easy access to Redbridge by means of the ring road?
