Sir – The blatant hypocrisy of county council leader Keith Mitchell is making him the laughing-stock of Oxfordshire.

His letter (Letters, January 13) repeats his continual pretence that nobody is proposing alternatives to the cuts his council intends to make to libraries and other services.

However, when it is proposed that half a million pounds should be saved by reducing councillors’ expenses, his Tory yes-men (and, shamefully, the Lib Dems) vote against the proposal.

Even more could be saved if Mr Mitchell and his colleagues did their jobs without pay, as he is suggesting local people should do in supporting libraries, yet he seems deaf to such constructive ideas.
