IT is hard to believe that the leader of Oxfordshire County Council, Keith Mitchell, and councillor Jean Fooks have to rely on the Oxford Mail to communicate on important matters such as the closure of libraries.

He notes that Mrs Fooks opposes the closures, which would be commendable, until we remember her enthusiasm for the extravagant spending on the recycling of household waste in Oxford, which of course has resulted in part, for the present shortage of funds for services such as the libraries.

It is sickening to see Oxford littered with wheelie bins and heartbreaking to see our poor dustmen struggle to remove ever greater mounds of rubbish which households normally disposed of themselves before they had the convenience of the enormous bins and bags.

Where should the axe fall to achieve savings for the coming year?

You have the advantage of hindsight Mr Mitchell. Demand Mrs Fooks’ resignation and be man enough to vacate the office you hold, which threatens to deprive Oxford citizens of their right to an amenity such as the libraries which past generations have worked for and benefited from for ages.

Your combined allowances could easily could staff Bury Knowle Library, Headington.
