A THEATRE will be able to work more closely with schools and community groups for the next two years thanks to the “amazing” generosity of the public.

Oxford Playhouse last night revealed it had raised £50,000, – including £20,877 pledged by donors online.

The money will secure the future of the theatre’s community engagement officer, Maisy Ash, who will now be able to work more closely with communities across the county.

People from poorer backgrounds or those who would not normally have the chance to go to the theatre will be targeted under the scheme.

Michelle Dickson, director of the Beaumont Street venue, paid tribute to everyone who had helped the Big Give campaign. She said: “It was amazing how many people had donated.

She said: “We received donations from theatre-goers, long-term supporters, staff, friends, family and theatre professionals up and down the country, and we’re extremely grateful for every single gift.

“I’m very proud that the Playhouse was one of the most successful charities taking part in the Big Give.

“The generosity of our supporters will ensure that the valuable work our community engagement officer does can continue for the next two years.

“We’ll be able to introduce new people to all the Playhouse has to offer and provide cheap and free tickets to those who couldn’t otherwise afford to come.”

Last month, the Theatre took part in The Big Arts Give Challenge on December 6.

The scheme encouraged more than 7,000 charities to see how much they could raise in one day. Then, using money donated by philanthopists and companies from around the world, it matched whatever the charity can raise.

Oxford Playhouse also received an extra £9,000 in gift aid.

Ms Ash said part of her role included bringing in people, families and groups who had never visited the theatre before.

She said: “It means so much as it enables me to continue working with well-deserving community groups and charities.

“There are so many great organisations in Oxford facing a lot of hardships due to cuts in funding and their resources are being drained.

“The generosity of people who donated means that we can continue to offer free and discounted tickets, backstage tours and other opportunities for all the organisations we work with.

“Their money not only impacts the Playhouse but the wider community.”
