TWO major Wallingford housing developments which divided residents have been rejected.

South Oxfordshire District Council’s planning committee threw out plans for 380 homes and a care home at Winterbrook, off Reading Road.

A second plan for an access road and 98 homes on a neighbouring site was also rejected at the meeting on Wednesday.

The council favours development at Slade End Farm instead of Winterbrook as part of long-term plans for housing in the town.

Neil Kelly, 74, who lives with wife Anna, 55, in Winterbrook Lane, was among 30 residents at the meeting.

He said: “We are all relieved by the councillors’ decision to reject these two applications but we remain wary because both developers could appeal.”

Berkeley Homes, behind the 380 homes plan, declined to comment and Wates Developments, behind the 98 homes scheme, said it was considering its position.
