A police officer was seriously injured in a collision on the A34 in Oxfordshire last night.

The roads policing officer, who is based at Bicester, was assisting the driver of a white Ford Transit box van which had broken down on the A34, north of the Peartree interchange, at about 8pm.

As she was helping the driver, a blue Ford Mondeo travelling northbound collided with her and a police vehicle.

The officer was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, where she is being treated for serious injuries including a broken leg. Her condition is not life-threatening.

A 63-year-old man from Leicestershire was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and has been released on bail until February 8.

The collision led to the closure of the A34 northbound for several hours to allow for investigations to take place and the vehicles involved to be recovered.

PC Nigel Welham is appealing for witnesses to the collision to contact him. If you have information, please call the 24-hour Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505. If you don’t want to speak to police or leave your name, call the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
