POLICE are meeting parents and children at every school in Abingdon in a bid to improve road safety.

It comes after Abingdon Neighbourhood Action Group, a police-run group, warned of road dangers to youngsters.

They spoke to children about road and cycle safety and chatted to parents about issues including illegal parking and dropping-off.

Sgt Kevin Hickman said: “We will not be giving tickets out, although the option is there, but this is more of an education in road safety.

“We accept we are not going to solve the problem overnight, we just hope to re-educate people.”

Ty-Ree Partridge, 11, a Larkmead schoolgirl was killed after a collision with a van as she cycled home in July 2009.

And cyclist Sarah Waterhouse, 17, another Larkmead pupil, was killed after a collision with a school bus in October 2008.

Action group chairman Neil Boston said: “We feel by educating drivers and pedestrians we will significantly reduce the likelihood of there being an accident.”

Dick Furniss, headteacher at St Nicolas CofE Primary School in Boxhill Walk, said: “The initiative is about raising awareness but also trying to change people’s patterns of behaviour over time.

“I, like anyone else, do not want to be the headteacher that has to visit someone in the John Radcliffe Hospital.”
