SPORTY Ruth Hampson is used to a challenge, but nothing could prepare her for taking part in a wacky TV game show.

Viewers will see the 24-year-old tackle extreme obstacle courses in a bid to win £10,000 on BBC1’s Total Wipeout.

Miss Hampson, from North Hinksey Lane in North Hinksey, Oxford, was flown to Argentina to compete against 19 other contestants in the show, presented by Richard Hammond.

The sport and enrichment officer at Abingdon and Witney College, who takes part in hockey, athletics and horse riding, faced a wall of punching fists, and had to bounce between four large balls and dodge robot arms.

Failure during the five-day ordeal meant contestants were plunged into water or mud.

The former Matthew Arnold School pupil said: “We had people throwing up and fainting. With the jet lag as well, my body didn’t know what was happening.

“It was ridiculous – I think why on earth did I do it?

“People end up bending their bodies in weird ways. The worst part was when I landed in thick, horrible mud. It went up to my knees and it was so tiring getting out of it.

“I hear my attempt in the big red balls was pretty entertaining. Somewhere along the line I did a flip.

“I wasn’t really scared. I was nervous but the adrenaline was buzzing. I would say I’m quite a physically fit but after the qualifying I was exhausted.”

She added: “It was so surreal. Until I see it on telly I don’t think I’ll actually believe it. But it was a brilliant experience and I met some amazing people.”

Her mum, Scilla Erskine, 62, said: “I was a bit worried that she would break her neck or smack her teeth but it was fine.”

Miss Hampson applied to the show, filmed in October, after being dared to by a friend.

She said: “It was very spontaneous. My friend emailed me the application form and said: ‘I dare you to enter this’.

“I did and didn’t think anything of it until I got an email saying I had an audition. I think what they liked about me was I’m quite competitive and they like to see competitive girls.”

The show will be broadcast tomorrow at 6pm on BBC1.
