Making An Entrance by Margaret Martin (Green, £12) This is the biography of drama director Gerard Gould, who taught English and drama at Wheatley and then Lord Williams’s School, Thame.

The story of how he fled Nazi Germany as a teenager, leaving his parents and family behind, is told in question-and-answer form, and there are accolades from former pupils, and for his work with the Young Oxford Playhouse Association and later, the Oxford Theatre Guild.

Keeping It In The Family D. J. Wiseman (Matador, £8.99) This novel by a local author features family history sleuth Lydia Silverstream, who buys house clearance mementos and reunites them with their rightful owner. In this story, she discovers a sinister journal, which leads her from Oxford to the Lake District, Cambridge, Essex and Sussex, and then back again in search of a present-day serial killer.
