Police are appealing for witnesses to a theft from the vestry of an Abingdon church as a service took place.

Two mobile phones and a purse were stolen from handbags stored in the vestry of Trinity Methodist Church, Conduit Road, Abingdon, at about 6.45pm on Sunday.

Police said the thieves entered through the door to the vestry, which had been left unlocked. Some of the contents of the purse were later found discarded in a hedge on the junction of Larkhill Road and Faringdon Road.

PC James Barraclough said: “Being a victim of theft is never a pleasant experience, but to have your personal belongings stolen while you are worshipping in church is be particularly distressing.

“I would urge witnesses who saw anyone acting suspiciously at the time to contact me on 0845 8 505 505 or through the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
