When it was announced the bus companies would be introducing a new Paycard key for all services, I thought it would be a good thing.

I use the Redbridge Park & Ride every day for my journey to work. I thought modern cards which are charged remotely (on the bus), would speed things up.

First we had the issue of the transfer from old to new not working properly. This involved several trips to the shop (and long queues) to resolve the issue.

Then came the start of the new year, and more visits to the shop (and long queues).

When a card expires or is discharged (all the credits used), a message is sent from the machine (to the server), and the card is ‘hotlisted’.

No problem, I thought. Pay in cash for that day and visit the shop, in Debenhams.

I purchased a 12 day recharge, thinking that would resolve things, No such luck, however. Instead, the system flagged my card ‘See Driver’, who told me I was still hotlisted.

It can take 24 to 48 hours to recharge the card.

Can’t a notice be put up telling customers this fact, so that we don’t look like idiots and hold up the queues, as we struggle to find money to pay?

I now know to keep £2.50 as a back-up to pay for a return trip on Park & Ride buses.
