I read the article It’ll be a Monster (Oxford Mail, November 30) about a rare Mary Shelley manuscript going on show which is normally stored away from public gaze in an air-conditioned vault.

It set me thinking. There are problems for us all in order to return the country to economic stability.

There is unrest, anger and despair for those on limited incomes.

These difficulties were caused by bankers, but many think the Government is not being tough enough on them. Instead, the public will be bearing a big brunt and facing hardships in different ways.

So here are my thoughts: our country has endless valuable treasures being horded for posterity in museums, academic places, local authorities, etc. How patriotic it would be if some surplus treasures were donated for auction to go towards helping the national debt and saving some of the harsher financial penalties that will affect us. All receipts could go to a Free the UK of Debt account at the Bank of England.

I once lived in a house where the iron railings on the front wall had gone towards the Second World War effort. The Government says it will be limiting local authorities funding next year. Already Oxfordshire County Council is targeting unpopular cuts. Students are demonstrating about future costs of going to universities. Perhaps the Government should consider ways of getting an income stream like I have suggested. Those in the know will protest, but if it costs to store items not being used, then sell them.
