Abingdon Utd 1 (Organ 13)

Taunton Tn 3 (McNab 3, Piper pen 51, Vance 87)

Abingdon's poor run of results continued after they conceded a goal in only the third minute of their Division 1 South & West clash at Northcourt Road on Saturday.

A mix-up between Chris Harper and Sam Elkins gave the ball away to Taunton’s Dave Anthony, who raced clear and crossed for Ross McNab to rifle the ball into the top corner.

To their credit, Abingdon hit back ten minutes later.

Steve Davis worked the ball to Matty Horsell, who whipped it in from the bye-line and James Organ volleyed it on the turn into the far corner of the net.

Abingdon had their chances to take the lead in the first half.

A curling free-kick from Tom Melledew bounced wickedly and Taunton keeper Chris Astley, at full stretch, tipped the ball away.

Mark Barnes saw one effort blocked by Astley, before delivering a low cross which Harper failed to convert with a back-flick.

Just before the break, only a great save by Astley denied Luke Carnell’s header.

Early in the second half, Jon Gardner’s shot was cleared off the line by Taunton defender George Painter.

The ball was immediately played upfield and Abingdon defender Tom Franklin was adjudged to have pulled back a visiting striker. Alexis Piper crashed the resulting penalty kick into the back of the net.

Abingdon were rueing their luck when John Mills had an effort disallowed for offside.

With United sending more men forward, they were left vulnerable at the back. MacNab drilled a shot just wide and and Anthony had an effort saved by keeper Alan Foster.

From then on it was all Taunton, who pressed for third goal.

Three minutes from time, Foster saved at McNab’s feet, but the ball rolled wide and was cut back to the waiting Jon Vance, who tapped the ball home to seal the result.
