Traffic was delayed on the A40 in West Oxfordshire after a fire engine was in collision with a car.

A green Peugeot was involved in a collision with the fire engine at about 7pm on Friday on the westbound carriageway near Barnard Gate. No one was injured.

The fire engine was on its way to an emergency call in Barnard Gate from Wheatley fire station.

It stopped following the accident and continued shortly afterwards to reports of a fire in Barnard Gate.

The incident turned out to be a false alarm as it was controlled burning.

Yet it caused long delays for drivers travelling westbound.

There was minor damage to the car and the wheel arch of the fire engine.

Nick Bourke, Wheatley station manager, said: “There was a collision and the police are investigating.”
