FIRE chiefs are urging people to stay safe this Bonfire Night and go to organised displays instead of letting off fireworks at home.

Guy Dunkley, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman, said: “Be wise with your money and go to an organised display.

“Many of these raise money for charity and are the safest option if you want to enjoy a fireworks display.”

Events include the annual big display in Oxford’s South Park, which is expected to raise more than £40,000 for county charities.

Visitors will enjoy the traditional fireworks and bonfire, along with the now famous burning of a wicker man.

This year’s 38-foot structure, called ‘Zedlock’, was designed by Reuben Morris-Dyer, 10, from Stanford in the Vale Primary School.

Dan Barton, 40, from Fyfield Wick, who builds the wicker men for the South Park display, said: “It will make an amazing spectacle. At the moment I’m just a little bit nervous about everything burning to plan, but it should be a fantastic show.”

Zedlock has toured Oxfordshire this summer, making appearances at the Cornbury Festival, Oxford Car Rally, and the Blenheim International Horse trials.
