OXFORD United fan John Tyrrell thinks he might regret winning our Face in the Crowd competition.

The season ticket holder said the £75 he won after being photographed in the Kassam Stadium crowd at Tuesday night’s game was already spoken for, to buy a round of drinks for friends at his local, the Bear and Ragged Staff in Cumnor.

We are giving away £75 to our Face In The Crowd winner from every one of United’s NPower League 2 home matches this season.

Mr Tyrrell was watching with his grandsons Tom, 17, and Ollie Hagar, 13, as Oxford lost 2-0 to Torquay. But the U’s loss was the grandfather’s gain as our photographer picked him from the 6,400-strong crowd to be our winner.

Mr Tyrrell said he only realised he had won when several friends and his son-in-law Ken Hagar rang to tell him.

He said: “One of my neighbours rang me to say he’d seen me in the Oxford Mail and told me ‘get the drinks in’.

“I’m not sure how far it will go, but I think the money may be spoken for.

“The money did make it worth going to the game though, considering we lost.”
