Sir – Surely the answer to the St Clements parking problem is to utilise the vast unsued expanse of South Park, as it is confusingly known, at the foot of Headington Hill and a mere stone’s throw from all the frenzy you report from shops in St Clements.

It may be a bit muddy, but as we know, fairground or Army recruiting lorries manage quite well; or if that still presents health and safety anguish, layers of non-slip mesh — or whatever they call it — could be laid down and the whole parking problem solved.

And why not let it continue afterwards; the park is utterly useless now for 90 per cent of the year.
