I agree with John J Monaghan (Oxford Mail, October 28) that the Government made a mistake in capping the eligibility for child benefit.

It would indeed have been better to set the cap a little higher, and base it on family income rather than on the highest individual earner.

The Government’s decision casts serious doubt on its claim to be spreading the misery fairly.

Even if it is supposed that cuts need to be as severe as those proposed by the Government (itself a debatable proposition), that would not absolve the Government of responsibility for its choice of what to cut.

The Government is fond of saying ‘we are all in this together’, but its choice of cuts does seem to leave families and children deeper in the mire than anyone else. Reason enough, surely, for anyone to think that the Government is unsympathetic towards the needs of families and children.
