Labour county councillors John Tanner and John Sanders write that they are opposed to the county council’s plans to incinerate Oxfordshire’s waste (Oxford Mail letters October 29).

Unfortunately, when the decision was first made by the county to embark on this option – some years back – the Labour councillors at the time supported incineration.

Avid readers of the Mail will remember an opinion piece on these very pages when I went head-to-head with Labour’s county environment spokesman at the time.

I was arguing the case against incineration and he was implacably in support. Such a U-turn by Labour is welcome – and I suspect that the Greens can take some credit for their change of heart – but I fear that the window of opportunity to change the county’s policy has now passed.

The Greens will, of course, continue to argue for mechanical and biological treatment of Oxfordshire’s waste as the more environmentally-friendly option.

I hope that we can now count on the support of at least these (Johnny come lately?) Labour county councillors.
