John Sanders and John Tanner (Oxford Mail letters, October 29) are pinpoint accurate on the issues of waste incineration and the county council planning committee’s decision to approve Viridor’s application to construct its massive incineration plant at Ardley.
Only the councillors concerned can explain what changed their minds about the proposals which they rejected only a year ago on the grounds of their total inappropriateness for that location and the huge volume of heavy traffic that would result.
Their letter identifies mechanical and biological treatment as the way forward. I would like to echo this but to insist on a form that does not involve the sending of pelletized product from this process for fuel.
The way in which further atmospheric pollution could be avoided is by using the technique of vermocomposting, being pioneered in Portugal. By this method the components of residual waste can be effectively separated and recycled without producing combustion gasses.
