THOUGH we should all condemn any act of violence, I found the underlying tone of the letter from Andrew Coles, Trevor Pitman and Sam Webster-Moore (Oxford Mail ViewPoints, October 25), very unhelpful in furthering the cause of equality.
To have strong views about aspects of society is a fundamental right in our, and I quote, “open, free and democratic society”.
To descend to name-calling is not the way to gain support for something you are passionate about. That is achieved by intelligent debate.
Holding alternative views about homosexuality does not make you a bigot.
Being concerned about immigration does not make you a racist and being an active member of a union does not make you a communist.
It would appear that Unite the Union deserves more competent equality reps than they currently have.
