RAP star Tinie Tempah took time out from performing yesterday to address students at the Oxford Union.

The ‘grime’ artist followed in the footsteps of such notable guests as Winston Churchill, the Dali Lama and Mother Theresa by addressing the historic debating chamber, where he shared his views on the subject of success.

It came before the star’s concert at the Oxford 02 Academy, in Cowley Road.

The London rapper, pictured with the union’s vice president Ash Sangha, shot to number one with his debut album and last month picked up best newcomer at the Mobo (Music of Black Origin) Awards.

The 21-year-old, whose real name is Patrick Okogwu, told Oxford University students that success was “subjective”. He said: “I came to talk about how there is no specific definition of what success is.”

He said he had been delighted to have been invited, adding: “I have gone into youth clubs and had conversations with young people, but nothing like this.”

Oxford University student Louisa Stoppard, 20, said it had been “amazing” to see the artist at the union. She said: “It was cool to have someone who is our own age and who is on a par with people here.

“He is a massive inspiration to people who want to get involved with art and music.”
