AN Oxford United fan has been banned from games for three years and another man fined £500 after a fight in the stands.

A dispute between three spectators broke out in the Oxford Mail stand at the Kassam Stadium during United’s home game with Rushden & Diamonds on Tuesday, February 16.

United won the match 1-0 on a penalty in front of a 7,625 crowd to top the Conference Premier by three points.

Philip Mott admitted a charge of assaulting Diccon Harris by beating at Oxford Magistrates’ Court earlier this month.

The 30-year-old, of Temple Street, Brill, near Thame, was given a three-year football banning order, excluding him from games in England and Wales for three years.

He was also told to do 160 hours’ unpaid work and pay £600 compensation to Mr Harris, along with £85 costs.

Co-defendant Mark Wallington admitted using threatening words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress. The 38-year-old, of Clarkes Field Close, also in Brill, was fined £500, with a £15 victims’ surcharge and £85 costs. Magistrates accepted Wallington was not a regular footballgoer, and did not impose a banning order.

  • Officers are still reviewing CCTV footage of disorder at Oxford United’s recent home games against Aldershot and Port Vale. Arrests and charges are expected to follow.
