IT WAS party time at this Morrell’s pub.

But where and when did it take place, and what was the occasion?

These pictures were found in the belongings of the late Kathleen Mabel Bennett, who was known by a variety of names – Kath, Kathleen, Mabs or Mabel.

But there is nothing to indicate which pub it is, or the names of any of the partygoers.

Miss Bennett’s nephew, Steven Handscombe, of Stanville Road, Cumnor Hill, Oxford, believes the pub may have been in the Friars, the St Ebbe’s area of Oxford, where she lived.

Could it have been the Duke of York?

He thinks the picture may have been taken at a Victory in Europe (VE) or Victory in Japan (VJ) celebration at the end of the Second World War in 1945.

Another possibility is that it was a party to mark The Queen’s Coronation in 1953.

Whatever it was, with bunting fluttering in the breeze outside the pub, it was clearly an important national occasion.

Mr Handscombe believes the school photograph was probably taken at the junior school in the Friars, the St Ebbe’s area of Oxford, where Miss Bennett lived.

The other picture shows her in what was called the wire room at the Oxford Mail offices, in New Inn Hall Street, where the Argos showroom now stands.

Staff would monitor the teleprinters, which brought national and international news and pictures from news agencies in London and around the world.

Miss Bennett worked at the Mail before and after the Second World War, when she had served in the National Fire Service, based in Oxford.

After leaving the newspaper, she took over the family corner shop in St Ebbe’s and later ran a similar shop in North Oxford before retiring.

Do you recognise yourself or anyone else in the pictures? And can anyone confirm where and when the photgraph outside the pub was taken?
