The ‘Edinburgh or Bust’ mini- season at The North Wall Arts Centre in Summertown had some choice acts stopping off on their way to the Edinburgh Fringe. On Saturday I went to see the Singlonga Glee Club and had an evening of fun and laughter.

Fringe favourite David Benson and his ‘common-law pianist’ Stewart Nicholls have put together a ‘non-threatening audience participation show’ featuring pub songs, show tunes, movie songs and (they say) “the music we all know without quite knowing why”.

I am no great shakes in the vocal department but I was soon belting ’em out like a modern day Marie Lloyd — indeed, after five minutes everyone was joining in — even the Japanese tourists. This was helped considerably by the words being displayed on a large screen at the back. This really is a show for everyone, young, old or whatever.

The performers, of course, have fine voices — and a very merry wit to go with them. The show is a clever format of medleys, quizzes, compilations and requests from the audience. A particular delight was a competition to identify the products flashed on to the screen and then sing the jingle that made them famous. Some easy ones such as Cadbury’s Flake and Shake and Vac were quickly rendered by the audience but Benson was surprised that no one got the tune for Quavers! It don’t know why but I was immensely chuffed that I could remember all the words to the Cadbury’s Fudge bar advert! David Benson has a particularly fine show-tune voice — I loved his renditions of Cabaret and You’ll Never Walk Alone, while Stewart Nicholls delighted with his light comedy songs, especially his hilarious medley in homage to vegetables. This show is full of many such treats — it is truly delightful.
