I AM sure that many people will agree with Colin Smith’s letter (Oxford Mail Viewpoints, July 22).

While walking through Oxford that day, the filth was apparent on every side.

The only patch of clean pavement in Cornmarket was outside the Pizza Hut, which is freshly scrubbed every day.

Would it not be a good idea to go back to the old-fashioned way of ‘you are responsible for your outside facade’, especially for the eating establishments.

As it is, people leave their wrappers, napkins, etc, lying on the pavement where they sit to eat.

Sadly this disgusting habit had spilled over into the Covered Market. Although crammed with shoppers, there was a thunderstorm raging and people were sitting on the floor eating their lunch.

Getting back to street cleaning, it would help a lot if the street cleansing department could liaise with the refuse collection department and clean each section of the city after the dustbin day, so clearing up the large amount of rubbish left behind after the bins have been collected.

In fairness to the road sweeper, there are so many parked cars, it is impossible for them to sweep properly. Of course, this could be rectified if the driver got off his or her bottom and used a broom occasionally.

Sadly Colin, the days of common sense and pride in your day’s work has gone down the drain.
