FOR YEARS I have been campaigning to have traffic signals installed at Heyford Hill roundabout, as I believe it to be Oxford’s most dangerous intersection.
Over the past few years, I have been given various excuses by parish and city councillors why ‘signalling’ was impossible.
Even at the March area meeting when I raised the subject, they were dismissive and suggested that pedestrians, cyclists and the elderly on mobile scooters use the pedestrian bridge further down the road, forgetting that they would have to negotiate 39 steps to reach it.
The councillors have now changed their views and welcomed plans submitted by Sainsbury’s for the alteration and signalling of Heyford Hill roundabout, which will also include a ‘toucan’ crossing.
It appears that the engineers employed by Sainsbury’s were able to come up with a solution that satisfied all parties.
Considering the mess-ups we have endured at other roundabouts, have Sainsbury’s made a case for “try something different”? I think they have.
