SWIMMERS were surprised when Prime Minister David Cameron dropped in to see Chipping Norton Lido’s new energy-saving equipment.

Mr Cameron, who is the patron of the outdoor swimming pool, wanted to see the recently installed solar-powered heating system.

The installation marks the completion of a two-year project to replace all the pool’s equipment, some of which was 40 years old.

Mr Cameron said: “The people here have done a great job in raising the money to put in the investment and now that there are ground-source heat pumps, that’s going to reduce the cost of heating this pool massively.

“It shows that going green can actually save you money, as well as helping save the planet.”

He met Lido staff and trustees and chatted with swimmers.

Trustee Ken Norman added: “The Lido has won several awards in the past few years but this recognition of our efforts from the Prime Minister tops them all.”
