A KITCHEN porter died from a brain haemorrhage following a row with a group of men, police confirmed last night.

The cause of David Cox’s death came as officers warned against potential vigilante action in Rose Hill, Oxford.

Mr Cox, of Asquith Road, was found unconscious in a grassy area off Ashhurst Way, just yards from his home, at about 2.20am on Saturday.

Police believe the 56-year-old was involved in an argument with a group of men moments before he collapsed.

He died about 12 hours later at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.

Family members told the Oxford Mail last night post mortem examination results revealed Mr Cox suffered a blow to the head, although police were unable to confirm the reports and were awaiting further analysis by pathologists.

However, police also said the death had sparked problems in the area and warned people not to take matters into their own hands.

Inspector Andy Storey, neighbourhood Inspector for Rose Hill, Littlemore and Iffley, said: “We are aware that as a result of the incident on Saturday there are a number of tensions within the community.

“I would like to reassure the residents of Rose Hill that officers are carrying out a thorough investigation, but still have a number of enquires to complete before any final decisions can be reached.

“I would appeal therefore to everybody in – and outside – the area to leave matters to officers to conduct their enquiries appropriately and not to take matters into their own hands.

“Those that choose to do so will be apprehended and prosecuted to the full extent of the law where necessary.”

Four people, including two men aged 23 and 20 and two 17-year-old boys, have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and bailed until Saturday, July 24.

Det Insp Simon Morton said: “A post mortem examination was carried out on Monday and we can confirm that Mr Cox died as a result of a brain haemorrhage.

“Mr Cox’s family have been informed of this and our investigation continues as our team of detectives tries to determine his movements prior to his death.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed this incident, or who has any information about the circumstances surrounding Mr Cox’s death to contact me as soon as possible.”
