These travellers arrived at Cutteslowe Park last night Travellers have returned to an Oxford park just 24 hours after another group of families were evicted by the city council.

Last night at 6.30pm, four caravans, a van, a truck and a car moved on to Cutteslowe Park in North Oxford after removing bollards at the edge of the car park off the A40 Northern Bypass.

The travellers said they were planning on staying for up to three days after travelling from Southampton.

But the city council is today set to serve an eviction notice on them to demand they leave today.

One of the travellers, who would only give his name as Michael, said last night: "We want to stay here for three days.

"We have already had the police here taking our registration numbers. They will probably come back again tonight and they will probably be back here in the morning.

"We are travelling people. We travel."

Ian Thompson, head park ranger with Oxford City Council which maintains the park, was at the park speaking to the travellers last night.

Mr Thompson said last night: "This is a different group of travellers than those who were here before. Those travellers were served an eviction notice and left on Wednesday night after arriving on Tuesday night.

"They moved onto land near Oxsrad, in Marston, and with police support we served a notice on them at 10.30am today to be gone in three hours."

The new group of travellers, who are a family known to the authorities in Oxfordshire, moved on to Cutteslowe Park at around 6.30pm yesterday evening.

They already have eviction orders banning them from various locations in Oxfordshire, but they have never been on Cutteslowe Park before.

The city council plans to serve an eviction notice, with police support, some time today. The travellers have to be given a "reasonable" amount of time to leave - at least six hours.
