POLICE are urging traders to join a hi-tech security network to clamp down on criminals targeting stores in Wantage.

The Storenet radio network links local stores and the police station, allowing them to immediately alert each other of any suspicious or criminal behaviour.

The system costs a shop £1 a day and several businesses have already signed up.

Sainsbury’s in Limborough Road used the system last week after a suspected shoplifter turned violent. The police were able to send three units within three minutes.

Pcso Sue Harris, above, said: “Storenet is a fantastic system that really does help us do our jobs. The system improves as more businesses become involved and the network increases – the more eyes and ears on the ground the better.

“In Wantage there are already some really big players involved; Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, New Look, and Argos are just a few.

“The system works both ways – it’s a two-way communication method.

“Not only can shops alert us, but we can contact them and keep them up-to-date with the latest developments. Also, the shops can share information between themselves and can look out for each other.”

Sainsbury’s security guard Bob Helm said: “It is very useful. If we have a problem all we have to do is get on it and the police are here within five minutes.”

He said he would recommend it to other stores.

Store manager Scott Dykes added: “Essentially it is just to get crime down across the town. If we see anything in here that might go into the centre we let them know.”
