FIREFIGHTERS have recovered a body, believed to be that of a young man who went missing while swimming with friends in Oxford.

Police spokesman Rebecca Webber said: "Thames Valley Police is investigating an unexplained death in Oxford this evening.

"Police were called at about 6.15pm to reports that a man, believed to be in hs 20s, who had been swimming in the river near to the West Oxford Community Centre, off Botley Road, had not resurfaced after going under the water.

"Police officers and firefighters from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene within minutes and began searching for the man.

"The police helicopter was utilised in the search.

"The body of a man was recovered at 8.17pm by firefighters. At present, his death is being treated as unexplained. Next of kin have been informed and are in the process of identifying the man. His identitity will not be released this evening.

Police, fire crews and an ambulance were called to Tumbling Bay bathing place, part of Bullstake Stream, behind West Oford Community Centre, off Botley Road, at about 6.15pm.

Officers had received reports that a man in his 20s had gone missing after he was swimming with three friends near a weir in the area.
