THE county’s greenest music festival is set to sell out for the first time since it started two years ago.
Wood Festival, in Braziers Park, Ipsden, near Wallingford, was set up by brothers Robin and Joe Bennett, members of group Danny and the Champions of the World and the men behind Steventon rock festival Truck and, which is now in its 13th year.
The pair wanted to put on an event that was both more family-friendly and had a greener, community-based ethos, and so Wood – a festival powered by green energy including solar power and recycled chip fat – was born.
Nearly all the 800 weekend tickets have already been snapped up, so organisers have decided to put up an extra 50 day tickets.
The festival runs from Friday until Sunday.
Robin Bennett said: “It’s shaping up really well. We have got a great line-up and loads of interesting workshops planned.
“It’s looking like it will be our first sell-out.”
Performers at the event include Fionn Regan, Tunng, Frank Turner, and The Unthanks, giving the festival a distinctly folky flavour.
To add to the mix, there are dozens of workshops planned, where people can try everything from circus skills to jewellery making and composting.
Mr Bennett added: “The format hasn’t really changed over the past few years, but we have reorganised the site this year so all the activities are in a village area, which we think will work well.
“One thing we haven’t had yet is any sun, so we are really hoping it will be sunny, because that would be a first for Wood.”
He admitted his two-year-old son Brynmor, whose birth was part of the inspiration for the festival, was a little young for most of the activities on offer.
He added: “He will probably be in the car park looking at all the cars because that’s what he is in to at the moment, but I’m sure in a few years he will be going on the nature walks and that sort of thing.
“Wood has a family friendly atmosphere and a strong feeling of community. I think it is definitely coming to be perceived as the greenest festival.”
However, he said despite the green ethos, a lot of fun would still be had. “Last year, Joe and I were both up until 6am round the campfire. We are still partying, but partying in perhaps a more worthy way.”
The Bennett brothers performed at a warm-up event at Barracks Lane Community Garden, East Oxford, last weekend.
fbardsley@oxfordmail.co.uk Tickets to the festival are £70 for the whole weekend, £25 for the Friday, and £30 for either Saturday or Sunday. For further information visit thisistruck.com
