Fears have been voiced that a riverside pub's big screen outdoor showing of England's World Cup games will lead to loud-mouthed, drunken yobbery.

But the managers of Wallingford Town Council-owned Boathouse pub have denied there will be trouble.

They have sent letters to immediate neighbours explaining the plans.

The Boathouse plans to show the England matches on screens inside and outside the pub.

In a letter to resident, business manager Mark Brown promised there will be qualified door supervisors, no amplification and that the pub would stick to its maximum capacity. He added that only plastic glasses would be used.

But the precautions have failed to impress town councillor Theresa Jordan.

She lives close to the pub and has complained over many years about the noise and bad behaviour of drinkers.

The Boathouse itself was once regarded as a problem pub, but now has a good reputation.

Ms Jordan said: "The Boathouse is our property and we should be responsible for making it reasonable.

"Families will be down there by the riverside and they will be faced with loud-mouthed, drunken yobs putting fear into visitors to the town as well as residents."

She was backed by fellow councillors, including Mayor Nigel Moor who said: "The installation of a screen outside worries me."

Pat Granados said she was worried that the screen outside would distract motorists using Wallingford Bridge.

Marcus Harris said: "I believe the screen outside is a step too far."

Pub deputy manager Chris Butt pointed out that matches were being played either in the afternoons or early evenings and there would be no late-night games.

He said: "There should not be any trouble - we have portaloos and extra bins for bottles and litter.

"It is an important event and we want to make a big thing of it for the people of Wallingford."
