I like Jo Brand. She is naughty and funny, and her favourite victim is herself her (fairly large) size being the mainstay of her relentless self-ribbing.

Although Jo seems to have been out of the spotlight for a few years, presumably while she had her two daughters, now aged five and three, she is as razor-sharp as ever and attracted a capacity audience to her one-woman show at the New Theatre in Oxford last Sunday.

She started off in topical vein by reviewing some cuttings she had taken from the Oxford Mail and The Oxford Times. Jo's biting wit raised many laughs as she tore into stories including the May Day closure of Magdalen Bridge.

She had harsh words for her TV makeover by the notorious Trinny and Susannah. It was fairly obvious that their glamorous look for Jo had gone unheeded, going by her shapeless grey tunic and flip-flop stage garb, but she gave them grudging thanks for getting her into a decent bra!

Jo's laidback demeanour and droll delivery serve to enhance her style of comedy. Everything sexist and sizeist is fair game for Jo, and she had the audience roaring with tales of the things that irritate her most such as keep-fit, skinny women and (very topically) politicians. The male anatomy also was an area of fascination and much humour!

Jo has said that she prefers performing live, nothing topping the thrill of the theatre and she was certainly at home on stage in Oxford last week. Hopefully, we'll be seeing a lot more of her.
