LOCAL success was at a premium at Sunday's Wallingford Regatta on the Dorney course at Eton.

Abingdon School were the most successful Oxfordshire club. Their first eight rowed maturely to win the senior 2 eights, beating, among others, the Schools Head winners, Shrewsbury School.

Abingdon also reached the later final of the junior eights, but were pipped in the final by the Shrewsbury youngsters. They achieved three other second places, with their youngest members in the junior 14 octuples and the junior 14 A and B quads.

Pembroke and Oriel, after failing to reach the final of the senior 2 eights, finished first and second in the senior 3 class.

The only other local victory of the day came for the girls of Headington in the women's novice fours where their B crew also finished second, as did their crews in the women's senior 3 and novice eights.

Radley and St Edward's achieved two second places apiece, Radley courtesy of their junior and novice eights and Teddies via the women's senior 4 fours and the women's junior fours. Organisers Wallingford took second place in the junior 16 doubles.

Meanwhile, Oxford Brookes and Oxford University women were among the winners at the British Universities three-day regatta at Nottingham.

The only championship class win came for Oxford Brookes in the men's eights, but Brookes and the Oxford women also claimed success in the men's and women's junior eights.
