Oxford's Town and Gown 10k fun run a popular event on the city's social and sporting calendar is now less than a month away.

And this year's race, on Sunday, May 21, will mark the 25th anniversary of the event, which is held in aid of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and sponsored by the Oxford Mail.

Race organisers are expecting between 3,500 and 4,000 entrants, and hoping for another great day.

Last year saw about 3,700 cross the finish line, raising £40,000, which took the total amount raised since the first race in 1981 to almost £600,000.

This year's race will be started by BBC TV sports presenter Sue Barker, who is president of the Muscular Dystrophy charity.

Event spokesman Annie Jackson said: "Everything is going brilliantly.

"A lot of families of muscular dystrophy sufferers are being drawn to the race now and they feel this prestigious event is like a coming together.

"We have families travelling from far and wide to take part, wanting to be part of the Town and Gown experience."

The race will take runners past some of the most famous landmarks in the city centre.

It will start in Fyfield Road, taking competitors along Parks Road and through the University Parks before passing several colleges, including Queen's, University, Brasenose, Balliol, Trinity, Wadham, Keble, Mansfield and Manchester.

The finish, as in previous years, will be in the Parks, near the cricket ground.

Ms Jackson said entries were down slightly from this time last year, possibly because the race clashes with the Blenheim Triathlon, but organisers are confident the event will be a success.

The race starts at 10am, with a junior race starting at 9.45am. Entry costs £11 for affiliated runners or £13 to non-affiliated runners.

Entrance to the junior race costs £2. No entries will be accepted on the day.
