Sir, I would like to take the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the remarkable doctor, John Thompson, to ask if anyone has recollections of him? He was medical director of Oxford's pioneering Child Guidance Clinic in South Parade from March 1956 until August 1957, and worked at other Oxfordshire clinics and charitable initiatives.
Dr Thompson, born in Mexico City on May 8, 1906, was the first to call for investigation of "medical war crimes" in 1945, after assisting survivors of Belsen. His initiative led to the Nuremberg Doctors' Trial and to the idea of informed consent. He was a friend of the poet W.H. Auden, appearing in his poetry, and of Doris Layard, and had been married to Marjorie Simkins of Brookfield, Oxfordshire. Any memory would be precious.
