We will be keeping a close watch on the progress of Peers School as it adopts new methods of classroom discipline developed in the United States.

US behaviour expert Prof Jerome Freiberg says school children on the other side of the Atlantic are different to British children they are worse. He warns that we are on the cusp of having problems as serious as those in the States.

Some teachers might argue that we are already there.

The interesting thing about Prof Freiberg's methods is that the stick is entirely absent. Discipline is improved by involving pupils much more in the day-to-day operation of their school. It is about encouraging positive behaviour and kindness to others. No one could argue that this is not what any good school should do.

The new discipline policy has the strong backing of teachers and Prof Freiberg is to work with them on implementing it over the next three years.

Full marks to Peers for giving it a go. We wish the school and its students success.
