An Oxford pre-school which almost closed four years ago because of poor standards is now offering good provision for children, Ofsted has found.

When Linda Jedynowicz took over as supervisor of Rose Hill Pre-School, in Ashurst Way, it was given six months to improve or face closure.

Since then, it has continued to improve steadily each year and has been judged 'good' overall for the first time.

The inspection report praised the behaviour of children, the quality of teaching and learning and the caring staff.

It said: "As children enter the welcoming environment of the pre-school, they are helped to settle by staff that are sensitive towards their individual needs.

"Close and caring relationships between staff and children help the children develop a strong sense of self."

The report highlighted the broad range of stimulating activities available, the high-quality toys and play resources and the interesting outdoor play area.

Inspectors were impressed by the children's awareness of healthy eating and their opportunities for physical activity.

Mrs Jedynowicz said: "When I took over the playgroup, it had six months to get the standards up.

"Each year we've got better and better and this time we've got a good report, which is fantastic.

"We've managed this by working as a team and working well with parents. We have a lot of children with special educational needs and who speak English as a second language.

"They do very well here as well because we have bilingual workers. We're really pleased with the report."
