A crown court judge this morning lifted the naming ban on an Oxfordshire man who had attempted to have sex with a young girl.

Judge Bruce McIntyre had in January enforced an order under Section 11 of the Contempt of Court Act stopping the Oxford Mail from naming Christian Gaisford, 23, when he was sentenced for the offence.

Gaisford's defence team had said he was a vulnerable man and his name should not be published.

The Oxford Mail objected to this and submitted to Judge McIntyre at a hearing last week that the court did not have the power to make such an order and that it was a matter of public interest that the public knew the names of defendants appearing in court.

At Oxford Crown Court this morning, in a reserved judgment, Judge McIntyre revoked the order allowing us to name Gaisford, who was sentenced to 15 months in jail and put on the sex offenders' register.

His co-defendent Jane West, 27, was sentenced to 21 months for aiding and abetting Gaisford.

Judge McIntyre also refused an application from Shahmeem Purdasy to suspend revocation of the order until Friday while the defence examined whether to continue its case.
