Abingdon has its second American-born vicar -- the Rev Dr Charles Miller, who has been appointed as the new team rector and vicar of St Helen's Church.

Dr Miller succeeds the Rev Michael Goode, who retired last year, and takes up his position in May.

Dr Miller studied at Oxford and was the former parish priest of New Marston, in Oxford. He is the second American to join the Abingdon team ministry -- the vicar of St Nicolas' Church, the Rev Dr Peter Doll was also born in the US.

Born in Connecticut, Dr Miller was educated in New York. He received his BA and MA degrees in Classical Studies before gaining a theological degree in 1982. He was ordained and served in the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas before emigrating to England in 1984 to take up the post of Warden of the ecumenical House of St Gregory and St Macrina, in north Oxford.

From 1984-88 he served as assistant chaplain at Keble College, where he completed his doctoral research in theology in 1990. For the next five years, as priest in charge in New Marston, he was a key participant in the founding of the New Marston Pastoral Centre, a co-operative project between the church and the local community.

In 1995 Dr Miller became the first Michael and Joan Ramsey Professor of Historical and Ascetical Theology at Nashotah House Theological Seminary, in the US, where he also served as Sub-Dean. In 2000 he returned to pastoral ministry in New York, at the Church of the Transfiguration, in Manhattan.

For recreation he enjoys music, especially opera and Gilbert and Sullivan, swimming, riding, the theatre and visual arts. His wife, Dr Judith Miller, is a counselling professional in private practice. They have one son, Michael, who is 11.

Dr Miller said: "The breadth and diversity of the parish, with its highly able team of clergy and various worship sites, offers rich opportunities. The post also offers a welcome chance to re-engage with ecumenical partners at the grassroots.

"I'm especially glad to be returning to the Oxford diocese, where we have many friends and colleagues."
