Abingdon's mayor Alison Rooke teamed up with street entertainers to open the ninth Abingdon Arts Festival at the weekend.

Other entertainment was provided by members of the Abingdon Operatic Society, buskers and a group of saxophonists.

The biggest festival in the event's history features 39 events at 15 venues in the town and surrounding villages over the next four weeks.

It is the highlight of the town's arts calendar and incorporates film, jazz, classic, brass and pop music, theatre, exhibitions, workshops and children's events.

The grand finale will be a popfest in the Guildhall on Saturday, April 8, when the star group will be Los Pocaminos, singer Paul Young's Tex Mex-style band.

The festival is organised by Apage (Abingdon Performing Arts Group Enterprise) with support from Abingdon Town Council, the Vale of White Horse District Council, the Newbury Building Society, Midcounties Co-op and the delicatessen Added Ingredients, in Stert Street.

Apage spokesman Colette Lardner-Browne said: "The festival has become established in the Abingdon cultural scene. So many people from groups and clubs have been keen to get involved. It's good so see so much enthusiasm. The festival has something to suit every taste and I hope people will continue to support it."
