South West 1 - Oxford Harlequins 10, Chippenham 27: Oxford Harlequins failed to capitalise on periods of dominance as they slumped to another disappointing loss in South West 1.

Chippenham ultimately deserved their victory at Horspath Road, but they should have been trailing at the break.

Having gone 14-7 down on 22 minutes, Quins spent the rest of the first half laying siege to the visitors' 22.

Elio Recchia, Andy Henley and Charlie Murphy all had chances to score, but Quins could not break through.

Having already passed up two very kickable penalties, skipper Andy Noyce slotted one to reduce the arrears on 40 minutes after a high tackle on Phil Vinter.

Quins could not regain the initiative after the break and two late penalties from Chippenham fly half James Gibson meant they finished well adrift.

The hosts' lack of cutting edge was in stark contrast to how the Wiltshire side began the game.

After just six minutes, scrum half and skipper Grant Trewartha pounced on a handling error to blast through the Quins line.

Debutant lock John Boddington simply recycled the ball and dived over for a try that Gibson converted.

Quins' equaliser on 14 minutes was equally clinical.

A series of late pull-outs saw them start with five props in the front five, which meant their lineout play was often chaotic.

But Quins nailed one when makeshift No 8 Mark Dixon was driven over after a clean catch and Noyce converted.

Chippenham's second try on 22 minutes was almost a carbon copy of their first.

This time it was full back Karl Barnt who smashed through and Gibson who scored and added the extras.

An incisive run from centre Jez Tanner saw Quins on the front foot at the start of the second half, but Chippenham soon seized control.

Rupert Crockett knocked on inside Quins 22 and a rolling maul was just held up.

Chippenham dealt what proved to be the killer blow on 51 minutes when flanker Gary Squires powered his way through some weak tackling and over the line.

Gibson had no trouble with the conversion and must have been preparing his kicking boots again when Darren McMillan raced through on the right.

Fortunately for Quins, he knocked on with a clear overlap at his mercy.

Led by Vinter and lock Ali Cradock, Quins' work rate never dropped, but they continued to waste any penalties they won.

The game became increasingly scrappy, while replacement hooker Simon Drake lasted just one minute on the field before being felled by an apparent punch.

Squires fumbled another good chance on 77 minutes before Gibson made it five kicks from five.
